I
often get disturbed by the fact that most young men in the recent times want to
bask in the glory of their parents wasting away the most productive time in
their lifetime. Growing up in the village presented those of us who grew up
there with serious challenges, which we had to overcome to at least come close
to being successful in life.
I
once heard a story that in the past, if you came of age and your parents
thought you could take care of yourself as a man, they urged you to go out
there and look for something to do to make money. To some extent the father
could destroy your ‘ Thingira ‘( young man’ s crib ) so that
you could no longer be accepted there, for you to learn how to hustle.
If we
carried out a survey we would see that most successful young hustlers in this
city came from all other places to Nairobi and they hardly knew any other place
other than TEA ROOM…. Machakos Country Bus …Mololine… KaKa ….and all those
funny places. They all had one thing in common they wanted to make a difference.
Making
the difference in life as a young man comes by nurturing
independence. This
independence cannot be achieved when you still live in the comfort zone that is
presented by your mother’s quarters, you simply don’t
think.
If you are hustling out here you have to think if you will eat, pay rent, wear
good clad and live the life you dream about.
Learning
to hustle begins by the throbbing urge to succeed. Unlike most of the self made
young millionaires in the west …in Kenya you have to start from a point of
disadvantage and learn to work your way up to success in life.
We
often admire people who have made it in life and forget that they had a place
they began. Overnight success is such an elusive dream that only happens to
those who don’t dream about it. You should not waste time thinking what you can
do if you just won 10 MILLION. In reality it may never happen in your life…so
keep moving with the little you have to build that business empire.
In my
little research I have found out that nothing is as retrogressive as the ‘hand
outs’ mentality. Today as I write this blog there are young men of my age who
are millionaires and they started from nowhere, while as there are those of my
former classmates who still live in Chagaa dens back in the village.
One
striking difference between the two kinds of people is one relies on being
given ‘hand outs‘the other is a hustler (always looking for opportunity to make
monies).
Most
people who entirely relies on being given hand outs’ are people who have simply
refused to grow up and a good number still live in their mother’s quarters. By
embracing change through learning to hustle this young men can become
responsible citizens.
I
hope you are in your journey to being a successful young Kenyan Millionaire
through your hustle no matter how humble it is.
I wish you good luck in your endeavors.
